Swami Guru Shantanand Saraswati Ji Maharaj


He was born July 16th 1913 (Vikrami 1970 Ashadha 13) in the town of Achhati, district of Basti from a Brahmin family. He was the third son of Pandit Lal Bihari Tiwari Tripathi. The young Shantanand was recognized as “Ram Ji”. It is said that Ram Ji was the son of Shankaracharya’s sister, Swami Brahmananda Saraswati.

At the age of 20 He was a Geeta press, Gorakhpur where he worked from 1933 to 1939 as book librarian maintaining his wife and children. After from which a feeling of dispassion started to grow inside of him taking him to the ashram of Shri Swami Purnanand Tirth Ji Maharaj (Shri Udhiya Baba Ji Maharaj) in Vrindaban where He stayed studying for 14 years. Shri Udhiya Baba was disciple and initiated as renouncer (Sannyasin) by his holiness Swami Shri Brahmanand Sarawati, the Shankaracharya of Jyotirmath.
